The Municipality of Lambton Shores has launched a new grant program to assist residents with disconnecting sump pumps from the sanitary sewers and installing backwater valves in their home. The program aims to reduce the strain on the sanitary sewer system and reduce the risk of basement flooding and other damage related to sewage backups.
During heavy rainfalls, sanitary sewers can become overloaded if there are sump pumps or foundation drains discharging unnecessary volumes of water into the sanitary system. Without additional safeguards in place, this can lead to sewage backups in homes and other flooding issues.
The Sump Pump Disconnection and Backwater Valve Installation Grant Program offers two subsidy streams to assist homeowners in taking action to protect both their home and the wider sanitary sewer system:
- Sump Pump Disconnect Subsidy: 100% of the eligible costs, combined with any permit fees, up to $2,500.
- Backwater Valve Installation Subsidy: 100% of the eligible costs, combined with any permit fees, up to a maximum of $2,500.
The Sump Pump Disconnect Subsidy provides financial assistance to homeowners who have an authorized contractor disconnect their sump pump from the sanitary sewers. By disconnecting sump pumps from the sewer system, excess water is redirected from the sewer system and reduces unnecessary strain that can lead to sewage backups.
As an added step to reduce the risk of basement flooding, the Backwater Valve Installation Subsidy provides financial assistance to homeowners who install a backwater valve in their plumbing system. A backwater valve can prevent sewage or wastewater from flowing back into a property during instances of heavy rainfall, flooding, or when the municipal sewage system malfunctions or becomes overloaded. To be eligible, homeowners must demonstrate that they do not have any downspout or weeping tile/foundation drain connections to the sanitary sewer.
Applications for reimbursement under both subsidy streams will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the application form is available on the Municipality’s website. Lambton Shores Council approved $50,000 to be available under the grant program in 2024.
