Huron Shores Area Transit (HSAT) is receiving a significant boost from the Province of Ontario, with a new funding commitment of $969,231 to support the rural transit service over the next five years.
The announcement was made today at an event hosted by the Municipality of Lambton Shores, joined by the Honourable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs and MPP for Huron-Bruce, and Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex.
Since launching in December 2020 with support from Ontario’s Community Transportation Grant, HSAT has provided reliable, affordable transit connecting people to employment, education, healthcare, and essential services. In 2024 alone, the service recorded more than 25,000 trips.
With the original grant program coming to an end in March 2025, the Municipality of Lambton Shores provided $50,000 in temporary funding to keep the transit system running while officials worked with municipal and First Nation partners to develop a long-term funding model. A critical part of that funding model included a provincial grant from the province’s new Ontario Transit Investment Fund.
“We are proud of the collaborative approach between our municipal and First Nation partners in support of a critical service that so many people in our communities rely on,” said Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook. “When the previous grant was coming to an end, we heard from the community, business owners and social service groups about how important this rural transit system was to them. We came together on a long-term funding plan and brought that forward to the province.”
The provincial commitment announced today completes that funding model, complementing new financial contributions from the Municipality of Lambton Shores, Municipality of Bluewater, Municipality of South Huron, Town of Plympton-Wyoming, and Kettle & Stony Point First Nation.
“The provincial grant announced today was a critical part of our long-term funding plan, and thanks to their renewed support, we now have a sustainable path forward for Huron Shores Area Transit,” continued Mayor Cook.
The combined funding commitments from all partners will allow HSAT to continue providing and enhancing transit services across its network, serving the municipalities of Lambton Shores, Bluewater, South Huron, Plympton-Wyoming, and Kettle & Stony Point First Nation and connecting them with the regional centres of Sarnia, London, and Goderich.
