Area Manager - Roads and Drains

Located along the pristine shores of Lake Huron, the Municipality of Lambton Shores is home to nearly 12,000 full time residents and thousands more who visit seasonally. Lambton Shores is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the vacant position of Area Manager – Roads and Drains, within the Community Services Department.            

Working under the direction of the Director of Community Services, the Area Manager – Roads and Drains is responsible for the management, operation and administration of roads, bridges, fleet, drains and equipment operations. Key technical responsibilities include managing the roads network and winter control; maintenance of municipal infrastructure, sidewalks, traffic signals, storm water management, municipal drains and streetlights; managing fleet, including acquisition, maintenance and disposal  

The ideal candidate will be a member (or able to attain membership) of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and will have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in roads maintenance and operations; demonstrated project management experience with management and/or supervisory experience.

The Municipality offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefit plan. The salary for this position is currently set at $68,904 to $86,130 (under review).

Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment

The Municipality of Lambton Shores has a dedicated crew of volunteer firefighters that is committed to providing fire protection, prevention, and public education services to the community.

Volunteer firefighters play an important role in keeping the community safe from fire and other hazards. If you are dedicated, have excellent team work skills and good health and physical fitness then consider joining our team! Volunteer firefighting is a great way to learn valuable skills, give back to your community and make extra income.

Volunteer Firefighters are required to attend and respond to:

  • fire calls
  • medical calls
  • technical rescue calls
  • hazardous material incidents
  • wild fires
  • motor vehicle collisions
  • weekly or bi-weekly training nights
  • incidents that are traumatic and could involve members of your community
  • volunteer activities such as Muscular Dystrophy Boot Drives and Christmas Food Drives etc.

Volunteer Firefighters should be:

  • comfortable with small or tight spaces
  • comfortable with heights
  • calm under pressure
  • good at following and understanding directions
  • willing to wear a pager 24/7
  • respond to calls at all hours of the day and night, in all weather conditions
  • aware of the physical demands of the job, including wearing approximately 100 lbs of gear at emergency incidents.

Recruitment Process

Our recruitment process consists of a formal application, physical ability testing, interview, health and medical testing and submission of required documents.

Summary of Recruitment Stages

 Stage 1 - Candidate Information Nights

Anyone interested in applying as a firefighter are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions. These sessions will provide information on the hiring process for all 5 of the Lambton Shores Fire Station locations.

September 16 – Forest Fire Hall at 7 p.m.

September 17 – Grand Bend Fire Hall at 7 p.m.

 Stage 2 - Submit Your Application
Application forms can be downloaded online here, or paper copies can be picked up at a Municipal Office or Fire Station.

The deadline for applications is September 20, 2019. Applications must be submitted to a Municipal Office (Grand Bend, Northville or Forest) to the attention of Karen Cameron, Administrative Assistant to CAO.

 Stage 3 - Physical Ability Test

All applicants will be required to undergo physical testing.

Testing will take place September 26, 2019 at the Thedford Fire Station.

Prior to physical testing blood pressure will be taken. If your resting blood pressure is higher than 150/100 you will not be permitted to proceed with the physical testing.

Please ensure you wear the appropriate clothing (active wear – running shoes and gym clothes) to complete the physical test. No watches, loose or restrictive jewelry.

Must be clean shaven for mask fit.

Physical testing evolutions will be performed with bunker gear and SCBA. Instructions will be provided to complete the evolutions.

Evolutions include: 

  • Carrying 65mm hose up and down flights of stairs
  • Lifting a 7m extension ladder off hooks at set height, placing on the ground and replacing back on hooks 
  • Dragging an 85kg dummy 15m 
  • Climbing up and down a 10.6m (35 foot) extension ladder 
  • A claustrophobic/confined space test
 Stage 4 - Interviews
Interviews will be conducted on the evenings of October 2 and 3. Only persons that were successful in the physical ability testing will be granted an interview.

Successful candidates will be required to attend mandatory training. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Certification process delivered by the Lambton Fire academy based at Lambton College will commence in October.
