Municipal By-Law Enforcement Officer

The Municipality of Lambton Shores is seeking qualified applicants to apply for the full-time role of Municipal By-Law Enforcement Officer. Under the direction of the Deputy Chief - Fire, Emergency and Protective Services, the Municipal By-Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for investigating complaints, identifying, interpreting and enforcing Municipal by-laws. The position will also provide information to the public about local municipal by-laws and assume responsibilities involving other specific services within Municipal Law Enforcement.

The salary range for this position is $58,900 - $73,624.

On-Call/Part-Time Firefighters

The Municipality of Lambton Shores has a dedicated crew of on-call/part-time firefighters that are committed to providing fire protection, prevention, and public education services to the community.

We are currently hiring on-call/part-time firefighters at all all five stations:

  • Arkona: 2 openings
  • Forest: 10 openings
  • Grand Bend: 2 openings
  • Northville: 2 openings
  • Thedford: 2 openings

Firefighters play an important role in keeping the community safe from fire and other hazards. If you are dedicated, have excellent team work skills, good health and physical fitness, then consider joining our team! Firefighting is a great way to learn valuable skills, give back to your community, and make extra income.

Firefighters are required to attend and respond to:

  • Fire calls
  • Medical calls
  • Technical rescue calls
  • Hazardous material incidents
  • Wild fires
  • Motor vehicle collisions
  • Weekly or biweekly training nights
  • Weekend training
  • Incidents that are traumatic and could involve members of your community
  • Volunteer activities, such as Christmas Food Drives, etc.

Firefighters should be:

  • Comfortable with small or tight spaces
  • Comfortable with heights
  • Calm under pressure
  • Good at following and understanding directions
  • Willing to wear a pager 24/7
  • Respond to calls at all hours of the day and night, in all weather conditions
  • Aware of the physical demands of the job, including wearing approximately 100lbs of gear at emergency incidents

How to Apply

Our recruitment process consists of a formal application, physical ability testing, and an interview. A summary of the recruitment process can be found below.

The deadline to submit your application is March 31, 2023. Applications must be submitted using the online application portal, or in-person by dropping it off at a Municipal Office (Grand Bend, Northville, or Forest) to the attention of Human Resources

On-Call/Part-Time Firefighter Qualifications

To become an On-Call/Part-Time Firefighter with the Municipality of Lambton Shores, you must meet several minimum qualifications:

  • Live and/or work within the volunteer response area that you are applying to. Preference is given to those residing within 3km of a fire station
  • Be able to communicate in English, both speaking and writing
  • Be able to conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of stations and all types of apparatus and equipment used
  • Have a valid Ontario class G driver's license with the ability to obtain an Ontario class DZ driver's license during the probationary period
  • Be able to work in a highly structured work environment and follow the rules and procedures of the fire service
  • Have Grade 12 or approved equivalent
  • Have the ability to make decisions and react calmly and quickly in emergency situations
  • Maintain the physical strength and agility to perform hard work and operate all firefighting/rescue apparatus and equipment
  • Not have any criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Successfully complete the recruit training program
Summary of Recruitment Stages

Stage 1: Candidate Information Nights

Anyone interested in applying as a firefighter are encouraged to attend an information session. These sessions will provide information on the hiring process for all five (5) of the Lambton Shores Fire Station locations.

There will be two (2) Candidate Information Sessions:

  • 7 p.m. on March 13 at the Forest Fire Station
  • 7 p.m. on March 16 at the Grand Bend Fire Station

Stage 2: Submit Your Application

Application forms can be downloaded online, or hard copies can be picked up at a Municipal Office or Fire Station.

The deadline to submit your application is March 31, 2023. Applications can be submitted by email or in-person by dropping it off at a Municipal Office (Grand Bend, Northville, or Forest) to the attention of Human Resources

Stage 3: Physical Ability Test

All applicants may be required to undergo physical testing or a medical exam.

Testing dates are TBA. Prior to physical testing, blood pressure will be taken. If your resting blood pressure is higher than 150/100, you will not be permitted to proceed with the physical testing.

Please ensure you wear the appropriate clothing (active wear - running shoes, gym clothes) to complete the physical test. No loose or restrictive watches, jewelry, etc.

Must be clean shaven for mask fit.

Physical testing evolutions will be performed with bunker gear and SCBA. Instructions will be provided to complete the evolutions. Evolutions include:

  • Carrying 65mm hose up and down flights of stairs
  • Lifting a 7m extension ladder off hooks at a set height, placing on the ground and placing back on hooks
  • Dragging an 85kg dummy 15m
  • Climbing up and down a 10.6m (35 foot) extension ladder
  • A claustrophobic/confined space test

Stage 4: Interviews

Interviews will be conducted in the evenings. Dates are TBA. Only persons that were successful in the physical ability testing will be invited to interview.

Successful candidates will be required to attend mandatory training. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Certification and other registered training will commence in late May.
