Registration vs. Licensing: All short-term rental accommodations must be registered with the Municipality of Lambton Shores. Information about the registration process can be found on the page below.

Effective February 1, 2023, all short-term rentals must comply with the Short-Term Rental Licensing By-Law (By-Law 43-2022). All registered short-term rental owners will receive their licensing application deadline directly. Learn more about the Short-Term Rental Licensing Program

In accordance with By-Law 29-2022, all short-term rental accommodations in Lambton Shores must be registered with the Municipality to continue operating. There is no cost associated with registration this year.

The deadline to register your short-term rental was June 1, 2022. If you operate a short-term rental and have not registered the accommodation with the Municipality, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. Owners who continue to operate without a registration certificate issued by the Municipality are in contravention of By-Law 29-2022 and may be subject to the penalties listed under Section 10: Offence and Penalty Provisions.

If you recently purchased a Dwelling to be used as a short-term rental, you must complete the registration form before advertising or using the Dwelling as a short-term rental accommodation.

What is the definition of a Short-Term Rental?

A “Short-Term Rental” or “STR” means all or part of a legally established Dwelling that operates or offers a place of temporary residence, lodging or occupancy by way of a rental agreement or similar commercial transaction for a period of less than thirty (30) consecutive nights throughout all or any part of a calendar year, but does not include an Owner-occupied Short-Term Rental, motel, hotel, hospital, campground, couch surfing or other short-term accommodations where there is no payment.

I live on-site and only rent out an accessory unit or bedroom in my home. Do I need to register my short-term rental accommodation?

All short-term rental accommodations must be registered with the Municipality, unless the short-term rental is owner-occupied. Owner-occupied short-term rentals do not need to register the accommodation with the Municipality.

An "Owner-Occupied Short-Term Rental" means a Short-Term Rental being offered in a primary Dwelling where the Owner or Tenant is permanently residing, or a single legal accessory Dwelling on the same property as a primary Dwelling where the owner or Tenant is permanently residing, and includes a Bed and Breakfast Establishment.

Furthermore, an "Owner" means a person who is on title as an owner of a building or parcel of land identified on the parcel register from the Land Registry Office and includes a person who alone or with others has a right to possess or occupy premises where a business is located, or a lessee who actually does not own, possess or occupy the premises upon which a business is located, or a person who has responsibility for and control over the condition of premises or the activities there carried on, or control over persons allowed to enter the premises.

Will my personal information be made public?
All registered short-term rental addresses can be searched by the public using our online database. No personal information or other details from your registration application will be made public.
What happens if I don't register my short-term rental?

Short-term rental owners who continue to operate an unregistered short-term rental are in contravention By-Law 29-2022 and will be subject to the Offence and Penalty Provisions outlined in Section 10.0 of the by-law:

10.1 Every Person who contravenes any of the provisions of this by-law, and every director of a corporation who concurs in such contravention by the corporation is guilty of an offence and on conviction liable to a fine not exceeding $25,000 for a first offence and $50,000 for any subsequent offence.

10.2 Where a corporation is convicted of an offence under this by-law, the maximum penalty is $50,000 for a first offence and $100,000 for any subsequent offence.

I have more than one short-term rental. Do I need to register them all?
Yes, each short-term rental must be registered with the Municipality. Please submit a separate registration form for each short-term rental accommodations that you own.
How much does it cost to register our short-term rental?

There is no fee associated with the registration of your short-term rental accommodation(s) in 2022.

What is required to register my short-term rental?

To register your short-term rental accommodation(s), you will be required to submit the following information, as listed in the registration form:

  1. Name of Applicant and contact information
  2. Copy of the Applicant's government-issued ID that includes date of birth (and Owner, if different than Applicant)
  3. Address of the short-term rental
  4. Photo of the short-term rental (front-facing photo from the street or driveway)
Isn't there a licensing program or licensing fee?

There is no licensing program or licensing fee for this year (2022). For this year, short-term rental owners are only required to register their short-term rental accommodation(s) with the Municipality.

However, the Short-Term Rental Licensing By-Law 43-2022 comes into effect on February 1, 2023. Under this licensing program, there are additional restrictions and an annual licensing fee.

Can I submit my registration form in person?
