Lambton Shores Council Approves Capital Investment in Fire and Emergency Services Fleet
Lambton Shores Council has approved major investments in the Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services fleet, including the purchase of a new frontline fire engine for the Forest Station and a specialized mini engine for the Thedford Station.
At its April 14 meeting, Council approved the purchase as part of the Municipality’s 2026 Capital Budget and represents a proactive approach to maintaining and modernizing critical emergency infrastructure.
“Council is committed to supporting the dedicated firefighters who serve our community every day and to make the investments needed to maintain a strong fire service,” said Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook. “These investments ensure they have the modern, reliable equipment needed to do their jobs safely and provide reliable protection for residents across the entire municipality.”
The first investment is the replacement of the frontline engine stationed in Forest. Over its 25 years of service, the current apparatus has responded to a wide range of emergencies, including structure fires, motor vehicle collisions, and medical calls. Council awarded the contract for the new fire engine to Dependable Emergency Vehicles in the amount of $1,084,101.00.
“While the current unit has been well maintained, it has exceeded its 25-year reserve lifespan under NFPA standards and its aging components and evolving safety standards have made replacement necessary,” said Lambton Shores Fire Chief James Marshall. “This new multi-use apparatus will enhance operational capabilities with modern safety features, improved pump efficiency, and the ability to carry heavy rescue equipment.”
In addition, Council approved the purchase of a new mini engine to replace a 25-year-old rescue vehicle at the Thedford station. This specialized apparatus will diversify the Municipality’s fleet and improve response effectiveness, particularly in hard-to-access and rural areas.
“Replacing aging apparatus and introducing a versatile mini engine strengthens our ability to protect residents across all areas of Lambton Shores,” continued Marshall. “The mini engine offers several operational advantages, including enhanced agricultural and wildland firefighting capabilities, increased water flow capacity, and strengthened support for medical and public assistance calls. This truck will greatly reduce strain on firefighters during agricultural and wildland fire suppression.”
Council approved a single-source contract with Dependable Emergency Vehicles for the mini engine in the amount of $676,222.68.
The purchases were budgeted for in the 2026 Capital Budget, with $26,222.68 in additional costs funded through the Vehicle and Equipment Reserve Fund.
Both the engine and mini engine are being assembled in Ontario and are scheduled for delivery in Fall 2026.
