Sump Pump Disconnection and Backwater Valve Installation Grants

During heavy rain, sanitary sewers can become overloaded and can lead to sewage backups. It is essential that homeowners take action to reduce the risk of basement flooding and potential damage related to a sewage backup.

The Municipality of Lambton Shores offers two programs to assist homeowners in taking action to protect their home:

  1. Sump Pump Disconnect Subsidy: 100% of the eligible costs, as invoiced by and paid to authorized contractor, combined with any permit fees, up to a maximum of $2,500
  2. Backwater Valve Installation Subsidy: 100% of the eligible costs, as invoiced by and paid to the contractor, combined with any permit fees, up to a maximum of $2,500

More information about each program and the application process can be found below.

Sump Pump Disconnection Grant

Did you know that sump pumps should not drain into the sanitary sewer system?

The main issue with sump pumps and/or foundation drains discharging into the sanitary sewer is risk of overloading the sanitary system. During heavy rainfall, sump pumps connected to the sanitary sewer are adding unnecessary volumes of water to the system and overload it. This can lead to sewage backups in homes. By disconnecting sump pumps from the sanitary sewer, there is less stress on the system and sewage backups can be prevented.

One of the most effective solutions is redirecting excess water away from the sewer system by disconnecting those sump pumps. The less sump pumps discharging into the system, the less strain on the entire sanitary infrastructure. The reduced strain on the sanitary system also minimizes the risks of sewage backup in your home.

Drawing of an incorrect and correct pump sump installation

  1. Reduces strain on the sanitary system
  2. Prevents sewage backups in homes
  3. Compliance with Municipal by-laws

Residents can take advantage of the Municipality's Sump Pump Disconnect grant program and receive financial assistance to disconnect your sump pump from the sanitary sewer.

If a homeowner disconnects their sump pump from the sanitary sewer, the Sump Pump Disconnect grant can provide 100% of the eligible costs, as invoiced by and paid to an authorized contractor, combined with any permit fees, up to a maximum of $2,500.

To be eligible for the 100% sump pump disconnection subsidy, the work must be performed by an approved contractor. Property owner must also ensure all possible downspouts are disconnected from the sewer system as well. The detailed Terms and Conditions can be found within the Sump Pump Disconnect and Backwater Valve Installation Grant Application Form.

To apply for the sump pump disconnect subsidy, you must submit a complete Sump Pump Disconnect and Backwater Valve Installation Grant Application Form after the work is completed. There is a section that must be completed and signed by the Contractor.

Once the application form is complete, it must be submitted directly to the Public Works Department by email or in-person by dropping it off at the Municipal Administration Building (9577 Port Franks Road, Thedford, ON N0M 2N0).

Backwater Valve Installation Grant

If a backwater valve is not installed in a home, there's an increased risk of sewage backups during heavy rainfall or flooding events. Without a backwater valve, sewage can flow backward into the property's plumbing system and through drains, leading to flooding and extensive damage to the home.

Installing a backwater valve is an effective way to safeguard your home and prevent a sewage backup from happening. A backwater valve is a mechanical device installed in a plumbing system to prevent sewage or wastewater from flowing back into the property during instances of heavy rainfall, flooding, or when the municipal sewage system malfunctions or becomes overloaded.

The valve operates by allowing sewage to flow out of the property as usual, but when there is a reverse flow due to high water levels outside, the valve automatically closes to block sewage from re-entering the property's plumbing system. Once the water level equalizes and the risk of backflow diminishes, the valve reopens to allow normal drainage to resume. Essentially, the backwater valve acts as a one-way gate, ensuring that sewage flows out of the property but cannot flow back in, thereby protecting against potentially damaging and hazardous backups.

Illustration of how a backwater valve works

  • Property Protection: Safeguard your home and belongings from sewage damage and contamination
  • Health and Safety: Minimize health risks associated with exposure to sewage and contaminated water in your home
  • Cost Savings: Avoid expensive repairs and cleanup costs related to sewage backups

Residents can take advantage of the Municipality's Backwater Valve Installation grant program and receive financial assistance to install a backwater valve in your home.

If a homeowner installs a backwater valve in their home, the Backwater Valve Installation grant can provide 100% of the eligible costs, as invoiced by and paid to a contractor, combined with any permit fees, up to a maximum of $2,500.

To be eligible for the 100% backwater valve installation subsidy, the property owner must demonstrate they do not have any downspout or weeping tile/foundation drain connections to sanitary sewer and the backwater valve is installed inside the home.
